Professional Registrations: Overseas Qualified Oral Health Therapist- Dental Board of Australia (DBA)
The Dental Board of Australia (DBA) is established under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law as in force in each state and territory (the National Law). The Board’s role is to regulate dental practitioners in Australia under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (the National Scheme).
The DBA functions include registering dentists, students, dental specialists, dental therapists, dental hygienists, oral health therapists and dental prosthetists. The DBA also assess overseas trained practitioners who wish to practise in Australia.
In Australia, there are several ways to become a qualified and registered dental hygienist, dental therapist, or oral health therapist. One option is to complete a Board approved program of study. Overseas qualified dental hygienist, dental therapist, and oral health therapist can register in Australia if they have an approved qualification. More details below
The Process
As an overseas qualified dental hygienist, dental therapist, and oral health therapist, there are there are three pathways for application for registration in your scope of practice. Depending on which category you fall, you can apply to register as a dental hygienist, dental therapy, and/or oral health therapist in Australia. These include:
Dental hygienists, dental therapists and oral health therapists who are registered to practise in New Zealand under Trans-Tasman mutual recognition.
Dental hygienists, dental therapists and oral health therapists registered to practise in New Zealand are eligible to apply for General Registration under Trans-Tasman mutual recognition. This applies irrespective of where training was completed and qualifications held.
Dental hygienists, dental therapists and oral health therapists with recognised qualifications from UK, Republic of Ireland or New Zealand
The Dental Board of Australia considers qualifications listed below from institutions in the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and New Zealand to be substantially equivalent to an approved qualification for General Registration as a dental hygienist, dental therapist or oral health therapist. List of approved qualification available here
If you hold a qualification on the list you may apply for registration as a dental hygienist, dental therapist and/or oral health therapist (as relevant) using the form ADGF-20.
Dental hygienists, dental therapists and oral health therapists with other qualifications
If you are a dental hygienist, dental therapist, or oral health therapist and do not fall in the two categories above or you hold qualifications other than those listed. you must complete the assessment process organised by the Australian Dental Council (ADC). This involves an assessment of your qualification(s) and completing the ADC written and practical examinations. Once you have completed the ADC assessment process, you can apply for registration by completing and submitting the application form AGEN-20.
